Older-reader intervention works—but progress depends heavily on what is measured.

A meta-analysis of 106 controlled studies synthesized 586 effect sizes from 97,114 analyzed students with reading difficulties in grades 4–12. The robust overall effect was small (Hedges’ g = 0.21; 95% confidence interval 0.16–0.26), with vocabulary showing the largest domain effect (g = 0.42), followed by word recognition/decoding (g = 0.20) and comprehension (g = 0.19). Fluency gains were much smaller (g = 0.08), while spelling was not significant. The authors rated the evidence moderate to high, but heterogeneity was substantial, publication-bias signals were present, and researcher-made measures produced much larger effects than standardized measures. The population was broader than diagnosed dyslexia and interventions were school-based, so the exact magnitude may not transfer to a premium one-to-one educational-therapy setting.

Set goals and progress checks by domain. For an older student, meaningful vocabulary or comprehension growth can coexist with slower fluency change; report each honestly rather than collapsing them into a single success claim.

Digital reading tools can help poor readers—when the tool trains reading rather than merely looking innovative.

A multilevel meta-analysis combined 41 randomized or quasi-experimental studies of digital interventions for poor readers under age 15, representing 194 effect sizes. The average reading effect was moderate (Hedges’ g = 0.43; 95% confidence interval 0.30–0.56), but the prediction interval ranged from −0.44 to 1.30, showing that a new program could plausibly produce little benefit. Reading-specific digital programs had a reliable effect (g = 0.44), while the estimate for attention or working-memory programs was equally large but statistically uncertain because only seven studies contributed. Included research ended in 2022, many participants were poor readers rather than specifically diagnosed with dyslexia, and studies varied widely in language, control condition, and dosage. Two authors disclosed a videogame-related patent, and one was a founder of digital-medicine company Akili Interactive.

Evaluate software by its instructional target, active ingredients, dosage, and transfer—not engagement alone. Use it as structured supported practice, with an educational therapist checking whether gains appear in unfamiliar words and authentic text.

A one-day workshop may teach a program without making it feasible to deliver.

Six grades 2–3 reading-intervention teachers implemented SPELL-Links after one virtual training day and no ongoing coaching. Average adherence and instructional quality exceeded 80%, yet teachers delivered only 2.6 weekly sessions versus the prescribed four; observed sessions averaged 24.6 minutes rather than 30. All six described the training as insufficient and the program as complex, and only one reported being satisfied. Three additional trained teachers withdrew before implementation, while one implementer stopped early. This was an exploratory implementation study—not an effectiveness trial—with no student outcome data, one district, and only six teachers. The program’s developer funded the work, although the authors declared no competing interests. Generalization to EdCahoots is limited, but the management lesson is directly testable in a small educational-therapy team.

When introducing a method, track dosage, adherence, and delivery quality separately. Add brief rehearsal, observation, and follow-up coaching so a technically strong tutor is not left to translate a dense workshop alone.

Worth watching

Promising, but not practice-changing yet.

A 2025 double-blind trial of rhythm-game training in 151 French children with dyslexia missed its primary nonword-decoding outcome. Secondary word-reading gains appeared only among the 93 protocol-adherent participants, so replication and intention-to-treat benefit are still needed before practice changes.
