Spelling instruction can improve reading—not merely spelling.

A meta-analysis synthesized 59 studies, 2,229 kindergarten-through-ninth-grade students with or at risk for learning disabilities, and 327 effect sizes. In controlled group designs, spelling interventions produced small but reliable effects on spelling (Hedges’ g = 0.33) and word reading (g = 0.25). Whole-word study and multilinguistic approaches produced the strongest spelling effects, while phonemic spelling instruction transferred most clearly to word reading (g = 0.45). Single-case studies reported much larger effects, but those estimates should not be compared directly with controlled-group results. The populations and intervention designs varied, and most participants were broadly classified as having or risking learning disabilities rather than exclusively diagnosed dyslexia.

Treat spelling as another route into orthographic learning. Connect dictated words explicitly to phonemes, patterns, morphemes, meaning, and retrieval—not solely to a weekly test.

Dyslexia plus language disorder can create a different instructional profile.

A systematic review of 18 studies across four languages—15 cross-sectional and three longitudinal—examined children ages 3.5 to 17 with developmental dyslexia, developmental language disorder, or both. Children with both conditions generally showed the broadest and most persistent difficulties across decoding, fluency, and comprehension. Phonological processing was closely associated with decoding, while semantic and syntactic skills were especially relevant to comprehension. The pattern supports looking beyond word reading when a learner’s comprehension or oral language remains unexpectedly weak. However, diagnostic criteria and measures differed substantially, many studies were small, and the review could not establish that the combined profile caused any particular outcome. The authors reported no conflicts of interest.

Cogmed plus reading training produced large results—but in only 28 children.

Thirty Persian-speaking children described as having linguistic dyslexia were randomized to reading training alone or 25 sessions combining reading training with Cogmed working-memory exercises; 28 completed the study. The combined group showed large reported effects on low-frequency words, high-frequency words, word chains, and comprehension (partial eta squared = 0.53–0.68), with gains maintained for one month. Those numbers are interesting, but the evidence is far too early for adoption: the sample was extremely small, the study covered one language and dyslexia subtype, follow-up was short, multiple outcomes were tested, and the control group did not receive an active cognitive placebo. The accessible abstract did not disclose funding or conflicts involving the commercial product.

Morphology appears most useful for spelling complex words.

In a randomized study of 82 French-speaking students with dyslexia ages 9 to 14, explicit and intensive derivational-morphology training improved morphological awareness and the spelling of complex words. Gains extended to untrained spelling items and generally remained two months later. Reading results were more constrained: accuracy and speed improved strongly for practiced words, but transfer to untrained-word reading was small or absent. The study therefore supports morphology as a complement to phonological instruction, especially for spelling and word analysis, rather than as a general reading shortcut. French morphology differs from English, the comparison group continued business-as-usual speech-language therapy, and broader English-language replication is needed before assuming the same magnitude of benefit.

For older students, add brief work on bases, prefixes, suffixes, word families, and meaning—while measuring spelling and reading transfer separately.

Worth watching

Promising, but not practice-changing yet.

The Cogmed trial creates a testable hypothesis—not an adoption case: does cognitive training add value beyond equally intensive reading practice? Larger English-language trials with active controls and longer follow-up would materially change the assessment.
